The tiny village of Cucuron in Provence has a curious tradition. Every year on the Saturday after May 21st strong men team up to find a poplar tree "as high as the church," called the May. Then they drop it and carry it to the church for a blessing. The procession, accompanied by traditional singing, ends with dancing and a grand feast in the village's main square. All this celebration is a result of a vow made by the villagers to Saint Tulle, the patroness of the village for saving the village from the epidemic of the plague in 1720. It's a truly unique event that's certainly worth seeing.
