"The nightingales won't let you sleep in Platres" says the poem written by Greek poet Giorgios Seferis. This is especially true if you visit Platres village from April till July during the nightingale pairing season.
These tiny birds return to Platres every spring and leave in autumn. This is the dominant species of birds in the forests of Troodos, as eagles and vultures are very rare to spot. Nightingales usually return to the same place, around Platres, in order to restore old nests and bring up their nestlings.
Songs of nightingales were glorified in ancient myths and songs, and if you hear them at least once you will understand why.
