Climbing Mount Semeru

Mount Semeru is an active volcano and the highest mountain of Java. It is also known as Mahameru, which means "The Great Mountain". In Hindu times, it was considered to be the abode of the gods.

Mount Semeru is not an easy trek as slopes are rather steep and uneven. However, no rock climbing skills are needed to climb this mountain. The climb can take 2-3 days depending on your physical shape.

The culmination of the hike occurs on the second day, which is dedicated to the summit climb. A guided group will begin at night to make it to the summit by sunrise and marvel at those stunning views. The temperature in the mountains can drop below 5 °C, so it's worth bringing some warm clothes with you.

The best time to do the hike is during the dry season from April to November. The rainy season can make the trek too muddy and the trail is often closed.
