Martinique is a small French island close to South America, which makes it a perfect blend of French and Caribbean cultures. It’s not usually too crowded, but during the carnival, it gets a festive fever.

There are many festivities throughout the island, including non-stop music and parties. The carnival is a big deal to the locals because its importance is deeply rooted in Martinique history—the event started because the slaves had only two days to do whatever they wanted. For this reason, every single village on the island joins the carnival, preparing unique costumes, floats, and props.

What’s more, almost every day of the carnival is dedicated to a unique theme. For example, Monday is recognized as the “Burlesque Weddings” day because all men dress up in bride outfits, and Tuesday is the devil’s day, so everyone puts on devil costumes. During the carnival, you’ll be able to enjoy the true Caribbean spirit through local dances, songs, dishes, and many other activities.
